Artist’s Note
May the energy of the newly rising sun in the new year wash away the confusion of the past, and may that turmoil never cross into this place.
The thorny branch beneath the rising sun represents an old Korean tradition of hanging castor aralia branches above the door to keep illness and harmful spirits from entering the home.
These branches, covered in sharp thorns,
were believed to act as a barrier.
They formed a protective threshold between the inside and the outside.
In that same spirit, I hope that this powerful new sun,
and the protection symbolized by these castor aralia branches,
will keep us safe.
