Artist’s Note
Staghorn Sumac is a tree I had never seen in the place where I once lived.
Watching this unfamiliar tree turn color in a unfamiliar land brought an unexpected sense of Eastern familiarity.
And beside it, in the same unfamiliar sky,
hung the moon I have always known.
As I gathered these scenes onto the canvas, the painting began to carry a quiet, Eastern sensibility, even though it was created with acrylic.
Perhaps it was the way the sumac leaves were turning,
or perhaps it was the lingering memory of the autumn full moon.
